Petexbatún is a small lake formed by a river of the same name, which is a tributary of the La Pasion river. It is near Sayaxché, located in the southern area of the Guatemalan department of Petén.
Archaeologists gave the name of Petexbatún State to a group of cities during the Classic period of the Maya Civilization that include Seibal, Itzán, Dos Pilas, Aguateca, Cancuén, Tamarindito, Punta de Chimino, Nacimiento, and others.
Ceibal
Ceibal is a Classic Period archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the northern Petén department of Guatemala. It was the largest city in the Pasión region.
It was inhabited by the Maya, lacandones and colonized by black cutting slaves of wood, from Belize.
The inscriptions, they demonstrate that Ceibal bloomed and reached its height in the 10th century, whereas Tikal's sites, Pidras Negras and others were in decadence (year 800 .C.).
Ceibal is a interesting destination. Amazing history, great and peaceful walks among the forest.
One of its important characters is its Astronomical Observatory. You have to see its enigmatic Stella's.
Ceibal was declared cultural monument in 1995 and it has become a traditional archaeological destination in the area, as Dos Pilas, Aguateca, Tamarindito and Arroyo de Piedra are also near by, being Aguateca and Ceibal the ones by far more accessible for the average traveler.
Aguateca
Aguateca is a Classic Maya site located in the south-western Petén department of Guatemala .
The city was built on a 90 m. escarpment with a defensive fortifications surrounding the city. Archaeological remains, along with epigraphy and iconography at the site reveals an expansion of power and military influence from Aguateca by the ruling dynasty during the 8th century, a period noted for endemic warfare in the region. During this time, 4 km. of defensive walls were hastily constructed concentrically around the site.
